Surprised at the Results?

So you took the quiz. Were you surprised at the results?

I'm guessing you weren't. Though I tried to make the quiz a light-hearted and helpful tool the truth is it can be a little like salt in an open wound. Everything I do at Kick Some Class is to help educators avoid, learn, and recover from burnout. I know what it's like.

It's never pretty when a doctor paints a picture of your future for you with a negative diagnosis. While I am neither a doctor nor have I played one on TV, I feel like I need to do a bit of that at times. Fear is a powerful motivator when we care about ourselves, our quality of life, and our future. I am not ashamed of that type of motivating fear in the least.

So I'll ask. If you change nothing, where would you be in one, five, or ten years? Would that future person be enjoying life, impacting students, or having a powerful positive influence on those you love?

Reflection is the key to change. If you're up for it, I'll send you a few resources to help you reflect on what you want from life, and how I might be able to help you get it. The first one is linked here, it is my first podcast episode. It contains a bit of my story. I hope it helps. In a few days I'll follow up with another great resource I think can help.

My door is open more now

I hope you're doing well. Yesterday I mentioned I'd share a tiny bit of my story. I hope you can see how I fit into yours.

The sound of the jiggled handle… used to make me smile a sinister smile as I sat and said nothing. I locked it on purpose, and it did its job. It continued to do its job for a year until one day, everything changed.

That day the students were trickling out the door. Rather than wishing them a good day at the door, as usual, I was busy working at my desk. I had forgotten to get up and kick the small graffiti-filled wooden block from under the door. The locked-in session I so desperately guarded was not in effect, and I was unaware.

For years I would lock my door at lunch, and plan times to cut down on interruptions. These times helped me to get some work done, take a break, or just have a tiny slice of “me time” in the middle of a busy day. I’m sure you know what that’s like, only able to use the restroom for 30 seconds at a time at 82-minute intervals.

I am working, the door is blocked open, Bry-guy is oblivious, and that’s when she walks in. Now it wasn’t a Gin joint and this wasn’t a Hollywood actress of yesteryear. It was a colleague and she was obviously struggling.

I never ask how many doors she tried before landing at mine, but every project instantly became less valuable.

We talked about a frustrating student or a difficult administrator. Some days it was a crazy parent, a situation at home. Many times it was about a classroom management struggle, a grading policy, or a vent session. Over the next several months these moments of having advice pulled from me like a clown’s handkerchief, were not only helping her, but they were LIFE to me! These pop-ins weren’t something to guard against, they were things I looked forward to. I was beginning to see that I could help someone, but not quite yet how many of those someone’s there were to be helped.

Today, as you read this I hope you can see that my mission is to help educators maximize impact. That impact is not just in school but plays out at home, and in life. You don’t have to be a superhero that goes it alone.

Sincerely,

Bryan
